Secondary Smorgasbord ~ Out of the Deep Freeze

This blog hop is to showcase products who may have been left in the freezer for a while but whose time has come!  Special thanks to Darlene at ELA Buffet and Pamela at Desktop Learning Adventures for sponsoring this linky and putting it all together!

My product is a book I wrote:

I wrote this book after talking to my students about our "big test" (the state test) a year or so ago.  I asked them if the players who go to the Super Bowl say things like "Oh man, I so do NOT want to go to the Super Bowl.  I really can't stand being a winner!"

Of course, they thought I was ridiculous!  No one goes to championship wanting to lose!

So then I told them that our state test is like a championship.  It's a school championship where we should go in with the same mentality as the Super Bowl players.  And that's how this book was born!

It starts off with an engaging, rhyming story about the concept of the big test being a championship and then there are multiple review resources to use with the story to get ready for test day:

Take a look at this preview below to see everything listed above!

And, since this a special linky, I am going to offer the pdf version of this book at a special price - just $3 - which is half off! -  from January 15-17 on Teachers Pay Teachers.

I just ask that you kindly leave some positive feedback.  :)

Click {here} to go to the pdf version of this book on TpT!
(You can also order a soft cover print copy at blurb.com but it is $10.)

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the rest of the "out of the deep freeze" ideas!

Happy Hump day and Wordless Wednesday!

This is my first time ever linking up with Mrs. Stanford's Class for

This week, my 8th graders and I are working on learning how to write an Argumentation essay.

We have a great anchor chart (that's also in our notebooks) to help us with the organization:

And we have a great "anchor wall" with accompanying flipbook to help us with the other parts too:

Plus we're working on motivation because this is tough!

We can and will be writing pros if we take on the heart of a champion!

(Stay tuned - more about this tomorrow - I have to at least try to not be wordy!)

Thanks for stopping by!

First Week Back!

It has definitely been a busy and kind of long first week back!

However, we did have some fun "toasting" the new year with paper pieces of "toast".  (Yes, it's a bit corny - but it's fun!)

Next week begins the first round of testing that will last 3 weeks!  Yes 3 weeks!

It's End of Course Exams for certain courses like P.E., computers and learning strategies, reading and math benchmark tests for everyone, a writing assessment for everyone and 8th graders get a special science benchmark test.

So I am on the lookout for all kinds of exciting things to do to get us through the "testing situations" times (separate from when we will actually have class time).

I found some great ideas through the Fifth Grade Freebie Free your Time blog hop.

There's also a great Triple Nickel Giveaway going on over at The Teacher's Desk 6 to help me out!

One thing I am definitely going to do is work on motivation by asking the students to think of someone they think is successful and then we will discuss what those individuals did to become successful.
(I will propose that success did not come to them, they had to go out and get it!)

You can have a copy too - just click {here}

Then I think I will use this neat freebie I found on the hop for the students to use to pledge to their best!

After we have set the mood, we can do some other fun activities I found for Dr. King's Birthday:

Wish me luck!

January Pick 3 Pinterest Linky

I am excited to join The Inspired Owl's Corner and PAWSitively Teaching's Pick 3 Linky!

Since I teach middle school, I know I needed to find some motivation tricks for when we return from this wonderful 2 week long break.  So where did I turn?  Pinterest, of course!  So here are my top 3 Pinterest finds for classroom motivation:

See the source for this pin by clicking { here }

This first pin is a super improvers wall from Whole Brian Teaching.  I think it would be great to get some competition in the room and I am thinking of teaming up students and having them work their way up the ranks to earn various privileges.

The next big thing we were struggling with before the break was homework!  So I am thinking of implementing a homework club!  Students who complete their homework stay in the club, earn points for their team and earn a nice treat from me at the end of the marking period.

Last but not least, we all know that true motivation comes from within, and so I have decided to ask my students "What motivates you?"  I think I may show them small copies of this pin for them to draw upon.  Would be a great exit ticket after setting new year goals, right?

These are my top 3 picks and you can join the linky fun too or just check out all these other great finds!
