Now that September is nearly done, I am going to shift my focus from behavior management.  (Although I am sure there will be some updates from time to time!  :)  )

This week, I want to focus on accommodations.  As a special education teacher who facilitates in general education classes, I am constantly asked for strategies.  So, I made a booklet!

It starts out with definitions of what accommodation are and ways to create your own "strategies" and ends with a table of the most common issues and possible solutions.


It also comes with examples of some items.

One more behavior management idea - Harvey the Therapy Dog + a FREEBIE!

This month I have devoted my blog to behavior management as I teach special education and this year my core group are all children with behavior challenges.

While I have finally tweaked the system to suit my students' needs, I have one more component to add - Harvey the Therapy dog.


Harvey is my Great Dane and he has been in training to be a Therapy Dog.  I am proud to say that he has finally completed all his evaluations and is now a full-fledged Therapy Dog with Caring Canines.

This means I can bring him to school to hopefully help calm the students that get to feeling overwhelmed at times.  I am very excited to do this but know I have to be strategic.  So my first step is to introduce the idea to my students and to the other teachers who work with my students.

That's where my freebie comes in!  I have written a small story about Harvey that you can get here for free.  You could use it to introduce the concept of Therapy dogs for a special visit or for a small non-fiction reading passage.

Eureka - I think I've finally got it!

Since I work with students with special behavior needs, every year I have to find what is going to work.  Some years the students I have respond well to things like tickets and a raffle and other years, they need things like menus... like this year.




All of the students have point sheets.  I am using Class Dojo to show the students how they earning their points - there's even an app!  You might think middle school students would think it's too babyish but they LOVE their monsters!




The last step has been to tie the points to the menu.  So I made my menu into a little booklet with pictures.  I cut out each card, glued it to construction paper, laminated it, punched a hole in the upper right hand corner and then put them on a binder ring.  I made a set for each student in my class.




The idea is that each day the students can turn the booklet to the page that shows the item for which they are working and the points required to earn it.

  What's nice about the booklet is that I can add things to it as I find more things that for which they are wanting to work.

Behavior Management - Phase 2

Ok, so you know from last week that I was going to experiment with a concrete way of giving behavior points by placing buttons in cups connecting it to "filling buckets". 



Well...it worked in that kids had a visual and concrete representation of their points and made their points much more tangible.



On the other hand...they stole each other's buttons and they were generally a distraction as a result.  

Sigh.

So now I have to decide if I should just abandon the buttons and go straight to Class Dojo where they can still see their points but surely not steal them.  But this means I need my projector on at all times and will have to switch away from time to time to use the document camera which means the points are not always visible.  However the sounds might be enough of a reinforcer I suppose.  Well I guess I've talked myself into it - I have to adapt and adjust!


Naturally, the kids want to know what they can earn with their points other than social/personal skills class credit and rewards there so I made this new chart.


These are all things that they have said they would want to work for and so I created this menu and tied certain rewards to certain levels of behavior.  The better the points earned, the better the reward.  :)

Behavior Management - Phase 1

As you may know, I teach Middle School grades 6-8 and have a "behavior" Special Education class for which I teach Language Arts.  So now that I have 2 weeks under my belt and all the posturing for pecking order seems to be done, it seems we will be able to settle down.  I have been filling these first days with bucket filling, warm fuzzies and growth mindset.  I want to set the stage for positive interactions.




All of these students have point sheets where they earn points for completing assignments, following classroom rules and participating without disruption.  I am thinking about making their points more real by placing small "Dixie" cups on their desks and each time they do something to earn a point, I will put a button in their cup and each time they make a poor choice, they will lose a button.  I think this would connect nicely to bucket filling.  




Then maybe I can fade from the physical example of buckets to virtual buckets on Class Dojo.  I had thought of going straight to Class Dojo but think that maybe they need a tangible point collector first.
